The Mailman: Smitten

“There’s the mailman,” announced Baxter, Sheri’s German shepherd. He always barked in a special way when the mail truck arrived. His bark was not foreboding, but rather a timely announcement right on schedule.

Jerry was a tall, dark-haired, young man, who Sheri had never met. Her first impression was that he was handsome and about the right age. He seemed to be a kindly person and was always pleasant to Baxter. She knew that not all mailmen were receptive to large dogs.

“I wonder if he’s still single," thought Sheri, as she finished washing her hair. “Baxter, you will have to introduce him to me.”

As if the dog understood, Baxter headed downstairs to the screen door and waited for Jerry to walk up the driveway.

“Good morning, boy!” said Jerry, moments later. “You are such a smart dog.”

“Woof,” Baxter replied, enjoying the unexpected attention.

“I need to see Sheri,” Jerry said. “Go get her for me.”

Baxter went upstairs to find Sheri.

“Woof!”

Jerry rang the doorbell.

“I didn’t want to meet him like this,” said Sheri, wrapping a huge towel around her head.

“Sorry to disturb you, miss, but the mail delivery will be late next week. There is construction work scheduled for this area. I may not be able to get here on time.”

Sheri was speechless, suddenly smitten by the deep, brilliant blue color of Jerry’s eyes and mesmerized by the gentleness of his smile.

“Oh, I could fall in love with you,” she thought to herself.

“Woof,” said Baxter, as if he understood her thoughts.

“You are new in town. I was wondering if you would be interested in joining the kennel club. There will be a dog show later this month.”

“Woof!” replied Baxter excitedly, before Sheri had a chance to speak.

"That was a yes!” replied Jerry, his heart skipping a beat. “Great! I will let you know the day and time.”

Sheri soon realized that he had been smitten too, as he returned a few minutes later with her mail.
